There is always some inherent risk with every surgical procedure, including blepharoplasty surgery. However, when an eyelid surgery is done by a highly experienced surgeon, the risk of complications is low and very few patients experience adverse effects and complications.
There are more risks for patients with pre-existing medical conditions such high blood pressure, thyroid problems, diabetes and pre-existing eye problems. The patient should let the surgeon know about allergies or if you have a “dry eye” problem. The surgeon will assess your health and overall wellness as part of the consultation even before making any recommendations. For patients with medical conditions that prevent the surgeon from proceeding with surgery there are other treatments, including less invasive cosmetic procedures, which will be proposed for the patient’s consideration.
Some rare but serious complications include: ptosis, which is the drooping of the eyelid, a risk of losing the fold or developing multiple folds; chronic dry eye, inability to close the eyelid, bleeding, infection, heavy scarring, out-folding of the eyelid and permanent vision changes.
During the consultation the surgeon will provide detailed information on the risks involved and the aftercare instructions will help to prevent complications from arising throughout the recovery process.
