5 Top Rhinoplasty Questions

Rhinoplasty is a common procedure for many people who want either a more attractive nose nose and/or a better functioning one. Every year, tens of thousands of patients across the country undergo a nose job. Some are happy with the results and some are not. The unhappy patients will seek another surgeon to perform a revision. This is known as secondary rhinoplasty, and takes as much, if not more skill and, knowledge and expertise as primary rhinoplasty.

The key is getting the best rhinoplasty result the first time around. In order to achieve this, it’s essential that you choose a highly experienced, highly trained surgeon like the surgeons at Edelstein Cosmetic.

Educating yourself about the procedure is very important as well. You need to know as much as possible not only about the procedure itself, but also what to expect before and after nose surgery. Here are some of the most common questions about Rhinoplasty.

What are the different types of nose jobs?

There are a number of techniques used to change the size or shape of nose. Open Rhinoplasty is a technique that involves major nose reshaping. An Incision must be made in the columella, the part of the nose between the nostrils. The soft tissue and skin are lifted off of the underlying structure so that the surgeon can see the anatomy of the nose. With Closed Rhinoplasty, generally only minor reshaping is undertaken. The skin is separated from the cartilage and bone, which can be removed, augmented, reshaped, etc.

There is also reconstruction Rhinoplasty which involves rebuilding a partly or entirely missing nose that has been damaged or destroy through trauma or disease. Septoplasty is a procedure intended to fix a deviated septum for improved breathing.

Who is an ideal candidate for Rhinoplasty?

This cosmetic surgical procedure, like most others, is individualized to the patient. Each nose job is unique to the individual patient, depending on their needs, requirements, current facial features, etc. However, the qualifications for the ideal patient are the same for any type of nose surgery. If you are considering Rhinoplasty, you should be in good physical and emotional health. It’s recommended that you are at least in your late teens before getting this type of surgery.

When will I notice results?

Depending on the degree of change of the shape and size of your nose,  you may notice the difference immediately  after the nose splint and banages are taken off, one week after your rhinoplasty, or it may take weeks to notice the change.  Your nose may not reach its absolute final appearance for many months. This is because rhinoplasty surgery is a surgery of millimetres of change, and therefore swelling can easily mask smaller changes in nose shape and size that the Plastic Surgeon has performed.

Is Rhinoplasty safe?

A nose job is no more or less safe than any other type of cosmetic surgery. There is the possibility of some complications, such as bleeding, injury to the septum, problems with the anesthesia, etc. With a good Plastic surgeon who knows what he or she is doing, these risks are reduced. Also, you should be upfront about your medical history and let the surgeon know about all of the medications you are taking.

How can I choose a good surgeon?

Make sure that the surgeon you work with is a qualified plastic surgeon, and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.  Also, make sure your plastic surgeon is a member of the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He or she should also have extensive experience performing Rhinoplasty procedures.  Look at before and after pictures of other patients who have undergone that specific procedure by the surgeon you are interested in.
