How to Get The Best Tummy Tuck Surgery

Every year thousands of men and women undergo tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty to help them achieve flatter, firmer stomachs. While most patients are pleased with their results, it is important to remember that this is major surgery involving several weeks of downtime and a significant financial investment as well. It is no wonder that patients want to get the best results possible.

The following are some tips to help you get the best tummy tuck surgery that you can:

Find a qualified surgeon that you trust

Not all cosmetic surgeons are qualified to perform tummy tucks. You need to find one that specializes in this particular procedure and who performs them regularly. Since your relationship with your plastic surgeon will not end on the day of the surgery, it is also important to work with a surgeon that you trust and feel comfortable with.

Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle

Unlike some other types of cosmetic procedures, it’s possible for an abdominoplasty to last a lifetime. And the better you take care of yourself and maintain a healthy weight, the more likely you are to keep your good results. Ideally, you should be at your goal weight before having the surgery.

Also, women should wait until they are finished having children before getting the surgery, as a pregnancy can affect their results.

Stay hydrated

Following the procedure, you will likely experience tiredness and nausea. Drinking plenty of fluids will help to combat this as well as minimize your risk of complications. By staying hydrated as well as cutting back on foods that are overly salty or high in fat, you’ll also be able to minimize your swelling.

Use a compression garment

Many surgeons will give their patients compression garments to wear around the abdomen. In fact, you will wake up in the recovery room already wearing one. It is important to keep wearing this throughout your recovery as it will help your body to heal.

You may even want to get an extra one so that you can wear one while the other is in the laundry.

Get lots of rest

Following your tummy tuck, your physical activity will be very restricted for at least three weeks. Plan ahead to have time off work for at least two weeks, and extra help around the house during your recovery.  For the first three to four days, it is best to sleep bent at the waist (either by raising your head and shoulders, as well as your knees, on pillows, or, by sleeping on your side in a ‘fetal’ position).

Although rest is essential, it’s also important to get up and walk around each day to prevent blood clots.

Keep your scars out of the sun for at least six months

While it is natural for you to want to show off your new and improved beach body, UV rays can make scars appear more obvious through hyperpigmentation.

Listen to your doctor’s advice on what activities are permissible during those first few weeks.
