By Jerome Edelstein, MD
An interesting study published in the Clinical and Experimental Dermatology medical journal surveyed a group of 100 patients who suffered from facial, chest and back acne to determine the extent to which their acne interfered with their life. The survey, How much disability is caused by acne?, examined this by hypothetically offering patients either £500 (about $780CA – a considerable amount of money in 1989, the time of the study) or proper acne treatment, finding that almost 90% of the group would rather be free of their skin condition than receive the money. The results of this study will come as no surprise to those of us who suffer from persistent acne that negatively affects our face, back or chest. Luckily, Edelstein Cosmetic offers a range of treatment options that are able to reduce and eliminate breakouts so you can be happier with your appearance. We understand that acne is a troubling concern that cannot be effectively treated with a cookie-cutter approach.
Skin TxThe Skin Tx treatment system is made up of products designed to include powerful cleansing and healing ingredients. Formulated with hydroquinone, retinol, alphahydroxy acids, vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid USP) and more, SkinTx products work to clean deep into your skin, removing environmental impurities and stopping acne at its root. Despite the strength of these ingredients, patients with sensitive skin can still take advantage of its exceptional results. SkinTx is formulated to penetrate deep into the skin, nourishing it by implementing antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients. This means that, aside from treating your acne, it also leaves your skin fresh, healthy and radiant, no matter how sensitive it may be. Edelstein Cosmetic’s Medical Aesthetician will work with you to assess your condition and create the best possible SkinTx treatment plan for your needs. In weeks, you’ll be able to enjoy clearer and healthier skin with continued improvement further into the future.Highly Effective Topical Acne Treatments
Biophora
Biophora brings pharmaceutical-grade ingredients like vitamin C, peptides and alpha and beta hydroxy acids together with restorative natural ingredients such as green tea extract in order to destroy acne and strengthen your skin against future breakouts. Biophora’s acne treatment products work to remove excessive skin oils, minimize enlarged pores and treat persistent acne, leaving your skin vibrant, smoother and clearer. Both SkinTx and Biophora provide topical treatment systems that give you the confidence that comes with clearer, beautiful skin. The Korean Society for Acne Research study, A Nationwide Study of Acne Treatment Patterns in Korea: Analysis of Patient Preconceived Notions and Dermatologist Suggestion for Treatment, looked at just how effective these type of topical treatments are, finding that the combination of ingredients used in the systems described above demonstrates “excellent efficacy and satisfaction in clinical trials involving more than 16,000 patients.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment For Acne
Advances in cosmetic medical science have led to the development of highly sophisticated technology, able to effectively treat your acne without causing severe discomfort or lengthy periods of recovery. Intense Pulsed Light IPL treatment works to eradicate acne with precisely directed energy guided toward the bacteria and overly active sebaceous oil glands that cause acne. The light energy destroys acne at its source and reduces the chance of further breakouts by controlling oil production and eliminating harmful bacteria. Edelstein Cosmetic’s expert Medical Aesthetician provides you with IPL acne treatments that quickly and effectively reduce the appearance of acne, letting you enjoy the clear skin you want. The study, Light therapy in the treatment of acne vulgaris, by Dr. M. Elman and Dr. J. Lebzelter, sought to prove the power of IPL therapy as a commendable form of acne treatment and found that “the overwhelming majority of patients demonstrated a significant quantitative reduction” in acne while also discovering that IPL “offers faster resolution and fewer side effects” than antibiotic treatments.
Cleansing and Acne Eradicating Skin Peels
Chemical skin peels offer another outstanding treatment option. Peels penetrate deep into the skin to exfoliate and clean out clogged or enlarged pores. Dermatologic Survey proved the efficiency of chemical peels in the 2008 study, Comparison of alpha- and beta-hydroxy acid chemical peels in the treatment of mild to moderately severe facial acne vulgaris. It monitored the results experienced by a sample group of patients. After treating these patients with chemical peels, the researchers reported that the “peels were significantly effective” and provided “sustained” results. A glycolic acid acne peel may be suitable to clarify your complexion. In our experience, chemical peels are highly effective in treating acne, particularly in patients of Asian descent or when the affected areas are the back and buttocks.
Microdermabrasion
The use of microdermabrasion for acne: a pilot study, a study published in the medical journal, Dermatologic Surgery, found that microdermabrasion can improve the skin at the cellular level, making it healthier and more resistant to acne. The study found that all its participants experienced a measurable reduction in oiliness and pore size as well as an improvement in overall general appearance. Microdermabrasion is another treatment that is highly effective in treating back and butt acne.
Medication
Due to the expertise of our Medical Aesthetician, a regimen normally consisting only of topical solutions of a laser treatment for acne and/or customized skincare product system is effective in treating patients with acne. Results are generally highly satisfying. However, if such treatments are insufficient in achieving the improvement you desire, medication may be prescribed by Dr. Edelstein. This includes receiving a prescription for Accutane. Prior to prescription, Dr. Edelstein will meet with you and your Medical Aesthetician to ensure it is the safest and most suitable course of treatment.
Does Accutane work? For suitable patients, it absolutely does, but we like to begin with topical treatments first, which are often associated with fewer side effects.
