Arm Lift Introduction

Massive weight loss and the effects of aging cause the skin in your upper arms to sag. While wearing long-sleeved shirts and shawls may cover up the problem, you’re missing out on the freedom of wearing season-appropriate clothing, not being embarrassed, and possessing the confidence in knowing you have toned arms that are fitter and more attractive. If you are facing these challenges, you might want to consider an arm lift in Toronto at Edelstein Cosmetic.

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also known as Brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper arms. Sagging arms can result from genetics, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, or the inability to diet and exercise with the onslaught of a stressful life. But worry not; we are here to help create a more contoured and youthful look with an arm lift.  A brachioplasty is done by making incisions on the inside or back of your arms to minimize scarring. Once the surgeon has access to the excess fat, they extract it and tighten the underlying tissues to achieve a smoother and more defined arm.

Arm LiftFirst Step

What’s the first step?

Your first step will be to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience in performing routine to complex cosmetic surgical procedures of the body. Your surgeon will collect all relevant information and discuss your goals. During this stage, you will be asked questions related to your medical history, use of alcohol and tobacco, and the medication or vitamins you currently take. Take advantage of this time to voice any of your concerns regarding the surgery and ask questions you may have regarding the treatment and results.

In the time leading up to your arm lift surgery, your surgeon may ask you to take certain steps to ensure the success of the procedure. You may need to avoid or begin taking specific medications and/or supplements, stop smoking, undergo lab tests or a medical evaluation, and follow a specific dietary plan. You should also arrange to have a friend or family member pick you up from your surgery and help you at home for at least the first night of recovery.

What to Expect on the Day of Arm Lift Surgery

Your surgeon will meet with you before the surgery to answer any questions and to mark your arms. Once your general anesthetic has been administered, your surgeon will make incisions (usually to the inside or back of the arm) that allow for a tightening and reshaping of the supportive tissues underneath the skin. Internal and external sutures are applied after the skin has conformed to the new arm contour. If your arm lift requires fat removal, your surgeon will also use liposuction or traditional excision techniques.

The procedure takes about three hours.

Arm Lift Recovery

Dressings will be applied to the operating area, and, in some cases, a thin drain may be placed under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid. Stitching is done with absorbable sutures that don’t need to be removed. Traditional stitches, which are rarely used, would need to be removed after two weeks.

Before coming home, you’ll receive post-surgical care instructions. You will be given prescriptions that assist with discomfort in the healing process and help ward off infection. You’ll also receive details on when to resume normal activities and exercise.
