WHAT ARE LIP INJECTIONS?
*Lip injections take the form of commercial fillers such as Juvéderm or Volbella, or your own natural fat taken from another part of your body. The chosen filler is injected into the lips using a specialized needle to create a more plump and balanced look.*
SEE THESE IMPROVEMENTS
- Lips that have better definition.
- A more prominent upper lip shape (“cupid’s bow”).
- Better balance between the lower and upper lip.
- Better symmetry between the left side of your lips and the right.
- An enhanced vermillion border (the outline of your lips).
- A lack of vertical wrinkles so your lipstick won’t bleed.
- *No more downturned mouth corners: a 2006 Dermatologic Surgery study found that a sample group of 15 middle-aged women suffering from “mouth frown” saw lip injection therapy providing “effective, safe and well tolerated” results[1].*
Your options
Dermal fillers
*Temporary hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers provide you with the results you need without any of the discomfort and recovery times that come with older, invasive surgical techniques. They’re the most popular choice in lip enhancement, offering you natural-looking, rejuvenating effects that drastically improve your appearance. *A 2007 Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery article,Injectable Soft-Tissue Augmentation: The Present and the Future[2], determined that these dermal fillers delivered with lip injections are able to give you the kind of results you need, providing “safe, effective, and long-lasting” benefits.* There are several types of dermal fillers available, but we have found that Juvéderm® Ultra, Ultra Plus and Volbella consistently achieve beautiful, natural-looking results. In some cases, Volift® has also been found to achieve great results.*
*Volbella® is the new gold standard for non-surgical lip augmentation. Volbella® is an injectable filler based on hyaluronic acid (HA) that provides a desirable improvement in the lip contour, boosting volume, smoothing vertical creases (smoker’s lines), and achieving symmetry–all in a single treatment session that usually lasts 20 minutes or less. Plus, it has lidocaine (anesthetic) in it for a more comfortable treatment.*
*Volbella® is preferred to Juvéderm® Ultra because it has a smoother, softer consistency that mimics the natural feel of your lips better. Studies have found that results last longer, too.*
*A European study involved the treatment of 60 subjects with Volbella® for their lips and mouth area[3]. The subjects were assessed at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after their treatment. Almost 100% of the subjects reported that treatment achieved their desired goals of lip fullness, and not one subject experienced a severe adverse event. Desirable, lasting results were also achieved with less product when compared to the amounts injected in Restylane or Juvéderm® Ultra studies.*
Fat transplantation or fat transfer
*Because transplanted fat closely resembles your natural lip tissue and requires no prior compatibility test, fat transplantation has become one of the most common forms of lip enhancement. It involves grafting fat, harvested from one part of the body, to be reinjected into your lips utilizing precise techniques that have been designed to minimize your recovery period. Achieving highly satisfying results, lip injections with your own fat is an option for patients who prefer a longer lasting transformation of their lip contour. You’ll also get a somewhat leaner contour in the area from which the fat is taken!*
*If you’re unsure of which form of lip enhancement is right for your needs, we are ready to help you by providing a thorough consultation process that ensures you get the proper treatment—and high satisfaction with your results.*
DERMAL FILLER PROCEDURE DETAILS
*Before your lip enhancement, one of our experienced doctors will evaluate your health and speak with you about what you would like to achieve with the procedure. At this time, you should not have lip fillers already in place. For example, if you have received lip injections at another clinic and wish to have them corrected, it is best to wait until they are absorbed.*
*For two weeks before your injection appointment, you should avoid foods and medications that thin the blood, including Advil, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and omega 3 oils. These substances may increase your chances of swelling and bruising after the procedure. If you are prone to cold sores, medication will be prescribed to take before the treatment to help make sure the injections do not cause the virus to return.*
WWhen you come for the treatment appointment, you will be given pain medication in the form of a numbing cream, which takes about 15 minutes to work. Before the injections, we provide a small ice pack to cool your lips in order to help numb them and minimize bruising and swelling after the treatment.

*These injections can help even out asymmetrical lips, and give volume to thin lips or to those that are not in proportion with the rest of a patient’s facial features. Injections may be added to just one or both lips, and can be used to create a custom solution that is right just for your unique needs. The results last many months, depending on the filler type you choose.*
*All of the fillers we use feel natural to the touch and are perfectly safe to use repeatedly over time, if needed. It is very rare to experience allergic reactions to these fillers, and most patients tolerate them very well with just minimal bruising and swelling following injection.*
Consultation
*Once your medical history and concerns have been reviewed to determine that lip enhancement is right for you, your injector will let you know whether dermal fillers or fat transplantation is more suitable.*
Your treatment
Your dermal filler treatment
Topical anesthetic may be applied, if necessary. This is in the form of a numbing cream.
*Targeted areas are marked and then the injection is performed by one of our board-certified doctors. During the procedure, the doctor will inject a small amount of lip filler into your lips using regular needles and/or blunt cannulas, as needed. Once the product has been injected, light massage may be performed to adequately disperse the product. The injections only take about 10 minutes to complete. Afterwards, you are invited to remain in the clinic for another 10 minutes, holding an ice pack on your lips to further discourage swelling. Only a very small fraction of our patients have noticeable swelling after the lip injections, and all swelling is temporary and resolves within two days after you receive the injections. If you experience excessive swelling, icing the lips more and taking Benedryl can help bring it down quickly.*
Your fat transfer treatment
*The first part of your treatment is to harvest fat from an area that has an abundance of it. This tends to be the midsection or thighs. The fat is purified, then injected into your lips.*
Your treatment
*The healing time varies depending on the type of lip enhancement method you’ve received. Fat transfer usually involves a longer recovery period. You’ll receive instructions on how to properly care for the treated areas.*
Your results
*You’ll see an immediate improvement of your lip contour. However, swelling and bruising will hide your results. In about a week or two, you should be able to see the optimal results of your treatment.*
*Results of your Juvéderm® Ultra or Ultra Plus treatment can last for up to six or nine months, while Volbella® lasts up to a year.*
*Fat transfer can last for much longer than a year. In fact, with touch-ups your results may be long lasting.*
Risks
*The most common side effects experienced by patients include swelling and bruising. These are temporary and will go away within a few days. You may also feel some discomfort.*
*Rare risks of treatment include infection, sores, inflammation and blood vessel rupture. Raised bumps and lumps may also occur and are usually attributed to excess product. These complications can be resolved with medical treatment.*
*Results are not guaranteed and may vary from person to person*

Are you a candidate?
*Lip enhancement is for healthy patients who wish to change the appearance of their lip contour, including evenness, shape, and/or size. Most people are good candidates for this treatment, regardless of whether they need to add only a small or larger amount of filler to achieve their desired outcome.*
*It is important that all candidates have a reasonable understanding of what this treatment can achieve for them. An active infection near the mouth (a tendency to having cold sores) or allergies to the filler material or to the numbing agent used during treatment will need to be addressed, and may prohibit patients from receiving certain kinds of injections.*
Important Note
*With the fat transfer, two areas are affected and must be taken care of during recovery to ensure there is no infection, and that bleeding, swelling, and minor pain are controlled.*
*Patients should be aware that some fat cells may die during the transplant, so that the immediate result of very plump-looking lips will actually diminish a little in size as the transplanted tissue settles and adapts to its new location. Often doctors will overfill the area just a little to ensure the final results are just right.*
FAT TRANSFER PROCEDURE DETAILS
*For this procedure, a certified doctor collects fatty tissue from your body and injects it into your lips for added volume. Using your own tissue instead of foreign substances significantly lowers the risk of any negative reaction to the filler. The fat transfer also leaves lips feeling naturally soft, in comparison to some other fillers, which may feel less natural.*
*In this way, a minor liposuction procedure (removing a small to moderate amount of fat from certain areas) and lip enhancement can be complimentary and may be performed together.*
Lip Injections
*On the day of your procedure, your doctor will first administer a local anaesthetic to the donor area where the fat is coming from, which is usually the abdomen or thighs. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the doctor will perform the liposuction procedure using a suction device attached to a cannula. Using a small incision, the cannula is inserted into the fatty spots between the skin and muscle, and removes enough fat to be used for the lip enhancement procedure.*
