Receding chins are a major issue for peoples confidence. Men, for example, often hide their weak chins under beards. This is because a prominent jaw is attractive and associated with masculinity and virility. Women with receding chins have, have more readily undergone chin augmentation, with implants or sliding genioplasties, to define their neck line, reduce the roundness and fullness in their faces and reverse the signs of premature facial aging. Men are, however, now discovering how dramatic an effect, chin augmentation, and sliding genioplasties in particular can have on their attractiveness and confidence. Jennifer Aniston and George Clooney are only two celebrities who are leading the way on this trend.
Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said that between 2010 and 2011, chin implants have increased in popularity by 71 percent. They’re even more popular than Botox, liposuction and breast augmentation surgery.
Why Are Chin Implants So Popular Today?
The reason why chin augmentations have gotten so popular may have something to do with the rise of video chat technology. With more and more people using Skype, Facebook, and chatting on their iPhone or during a videoconference for work, they are beginning to notice the appearance of their chin on their screens. In addition, when you’re on Skype or a videoconference, your head tends to tilt down. This causes your chin to double and your neck to wrinkle. Needless to say, this is not a flattering look. Better chin structure stretches out this loose soft tissue, giving a tighter, more youthful and fitter appearance.
Age can also be a driving factor in the rise in popularity of chin augmentation surgery. According to a few studies, people over the age of 40 are the ones that are expressing the most interest in chin implants. This is usually due to the fact that they have sagging skin and fat under their jawline. Chin implant surgery can often be a dramatic way to improve this area, tightening the skin, muscles and fat of the neck and jawline, making the patient look dramatically younger.
The Procedure
Chin implant surgery takes about an hour. A sliding genioplasty, in which your own bone is reshaped or resized, takes only a little longer. You will be given local or general anesthesia. The surgeon will then make an incision inside your mouth between the gums and inside of your lip. Your surgeon will then place the implant right on the bone that supports your chin and secure it into place with tiny screws so that it does not move, or, in a sliding genioplasty, a qualified plastic surgeon will precisely cut the chin bone and slide it forward, up or down, to reach its ideal proportion and position. The bone is then also secured with tny screws which allow it to fuse back to the rest of the bone in its new position making it permanent.
Most patients can return to work within two weeks of the surgery. Complications that may result from the procedure include bleeding, infection and numbness.
Chin implant augmentation surgery and sliding genioplasty surgery are two of the safest cosmetic surgeries being performed today. You will experience moderate pain after the procedure, and you will likely be able to go back to work within two weeks after the surgery. Although you will likely experience swelling and bruising on your jawline following both surgeries, most of it will dissipate in two weeks. The swelling takes longer to resolve after a sliding genioplasty.
