Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid Surgery Introduction

Loose skin, wrinkles, and the appearance of bags or a general hollowness underneath the eyes usually characterize facial aging. In the delicate dance of facial harmony, the eyes are the artists that captivate the audience, and eyelid surgery is the choreography that enhances their allure. At Edelstein Cosmetic in Toronto, a symphony of skilled surgeons—Dr. Jeffrey A. Fialkov and Dr. Christopher Hong—conducted this intricate ballet with precision and artistry. Their hands weave through upper and lower blepharoplasty complexities, sculpting the eyelids into visions of rejuvenated beauty.

Located in midtown Toronto, our team of surgeons skillfully performs eyelid surgery on patients from all over the city and beyond. If you’re interested in rejuvenating your eyelids, contact us today to schedule a consultation.

eyelid surgery- what

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure that enhances the appearance of the eyelids. It involves removing surplus skin from the upper eyelids and mitigating the lower eyelids’ bagginess. This surgery is sought for cosmetic purposes to rejuvenate the eye area.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical intervention that serves both medical and aesthetic purposes. The surgeons at Edelstein Cosmetic strive to enhance the upper eyelids’ aesthetics and functionality. We make precise incisions to eliminate excess fat and skin, thereby improving eyelid laxity and diminishing droopiness.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Deterioration, deflation, and descent are the primary issues that our surgeons work to correct when performing a lower eyelid lift. Edelstein Cosmetic’s lower blepharoplasty is a tailored procedure aimed at revitalizing the area beneath the eyes. It targets prevalent issues like wrinkles, under-eye bags, puffiness, and dark circles, which are common signs of aging or hereditary factors. Fat is carefully removed from the lower lids in order to avoid overcorrection, which can leave patients with hollow-looking eyes. The amount of skin removed from the area is also limited, especially when operating on older patients with weaker facial muscles. Excising too much skin can create an overly round eye shape.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, provides numerous advantages. It can rejuvenate one’s look and enhance vision by excising excess skin from the upper eyelids that might obstruct the visual field. The procedure also diminishes fine lines and reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids, contributing to a more youthful and refreshed look. Additionally, the surgery often offers a psychological uplift, bolstering self-esteem and overall contentment with one’s appearance.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

A consultation with the surgeons at Edelstein Cosmetic will provide a thorough evaluation to determine if eyelid surgery is appropriate. An eyelid lift is designed to correct the appearance of your eyelids that have been affected by the aging process. You should be relatively emotionally and physically healthy and have realistic expectations. Anyone with signs of aging in the upper and/or lower eyelids may be candidates for blepharoplasty surgery. Many patients are candidates for both lower and upper eyelid surgeries.

The best candidates are those who are experiencing signs of aging in the upper and/or lower eyelids, such as sagging skin, wrinkles, puffiness, or under-eye bags. It is also crucial for candidates to be free of serious eye conditions that might complicate the surgery or its recovery.

eyelid surgery- first step

Let’s get started

What’s the first step?

The initial step in pursuing blepharoplasty at Edelstein Cosmetic is to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled plastic surgeons. You’ll talk to your plastic surgeon about your desired results during your consultation. Your health will be assessed. You’ll be informed about the related risks of blepharoplasty so you can make an informed decision on whether to undergo treatment or not. Additionally, we will furnish you with comprehensive preoperative guidelines and information regarding the recovery phase.

What to Expect On the Day of Eyelid Surgery

On the day of your eyelid surgery at Edelstein Cosmetic in Toronto, you can anticipate an organized and supportive experience. Upon arrival, our staff will welcome you and prepare you for the procedure. Anesthesia will be administered. It may be local with sedation, or if you have other procedures, it may be general anesthesia.

Incisions will most likely be made in the natural creases of your eyelids for upper blepharoplasty. Through this incision, fat deposits may be repositioned or removed. The tissue is tightened, and excess skin is removed.

Incisions may be made in the lower lash line to treat the lower eyelids. Again, fat may be redistributed or removed, and excess skin may be removed with tightening of the underlying tissues. All incisions will then be closed and dressed.

When you awake from your surgery, you will be in the recovery room. There will be small white tapes (steri-strips) covering your incisions. You will be able to go home when you have fully recovered from the sedation. There must be a driver who will be responsible for taking you home following your cosmetic eyelid surgery. A few patients react to the anesthetic after surgery with nausea and vomiting. This usually lasts less than 24 hours and should be treated with lots of fluids, Gravol, and rest.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After the blepharoplasty procedure, the patient will be moved to the recovery room and will be monitored as they awaken and rest until they feel ready to go home. Patients can leave on the same day accompanied by a family member or friend.

Resting and relaxing at home in the days after surgery will aid in a fast and full recovery. Strenuous activities should be avoided.

It is recommended that patients sleep with their heads propped up using multiple pillows to reduce swelling and bruising.

The pain experienced after blepharoplasty is usually mild, but light sensitivity is common for the first three days after surgery. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage pain, and bruising will last for up to a couple of weeks.

Follow-up appointments will generally be scheduled one week after surgery. Patients can return to work one to two weeks after their procedure. Your surgeon will schedule additional follow-up appointments. You can stroll as soon as you feel up to it, but walking as exercise should wait until two weeks, and more strenuous exercise (going to the gym) after 4-6 weeks.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Cost

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost in Toronto, ON?

In Toronto, the cost of eyelid surgery can vary depending on several factors. Highly experienced surgeons may charge more due to their expertise. More complex cases that require additional time or techniques may also be more expensive. The location of the surgery and whether local or general anesthesia is used can also affect the cost. Keep in mind that combining eyelid surgery with other procedures, such as a brow lift, will decrease the overall cost compared to each procedure alone.

Generally, cosmetic procedures like eyelid surgery are not covered by insurance. Consult with your plastic surgeons at Edelstein Cosmetic to obtain detailed estimates for your specific case.
