How Do Chemical Peels Work?Chemical peels are formulated with exfoliating agents (natural acids) that work to reduce and eliminate acne as well as other skin problems. Peels are a gentle form of skin resurfacing that are affordable and don’t require a lengthy post-treatment downtime.
Superficial chemical peels are recommended alone or alongside complementary forms of acne removal treatment. When peels are added to an acne management regimen, they have been shown to improve the general quality of a patient’s skin texture while also decreasing the number of blemishes within a short amount of time. The use of chemical peels has been reliably shown to offer speedy acne reduction, resulting in a high level of patient satisfaction.TYPES OF CHEMICALS PEELS FOR ACNE TREATMENT TORONTO
BHA or Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) with a phenolic ring within its chemical structure. Commonly known as BHA, it is extremely effective in treating acne due to its ability to penetrate and dissolve the intercellular components responsible for maintaining a blemish’s structure. The salicylic peel also has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce facial redness and lighten areas that have darkened due to acne related inflammation.
AHA or Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and a popular superficial peeling agent that exfoliates the skin while also correcting the root causes of acne. It used to be believed that AHA was less effective in treating acne-related inflammation than salicylic acid, but this has recently been disproven in medical studies. A glycolic facial peel is able to dramatically reduce acne inflammation by inhibiting and destroying harmful bacteria.
RSL Or Modified Jessner’s Peel
A Jessner’s peel consists of a combination of therapeutic ingredients : lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol. The strength of the peel can be customized in order to provide patients with a deep, effective peel suitable to address their acne.TREATING ACNE WITH CHEMICAL PEELSSince the underlying causes for developing acne varies from person to person, a large part of successfully treating the condition involves tailoring treatments to the physiology of each unique patient. Acne medication like Accutane is not typically considered unless your acne cannot be treated effectively with the treatments listed above.
Acne sufferers may also help their improvement through the use of sunscreen and mineral make-up.
NON-IDEAL CHEMICAL PEEL CANDIDATES
If acne is not properly treated it can lead to serious issues like permanent scarring. If the area of the skin to be treated is affected by sunburn, cut/broken skin, any form of infection or disease, active Herpes (simplex 1) sores or skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, rosacea or psoriasis, acne peels may not be safely used and a safer alternative may be presented.
Patients are not eligible for treatment if they have taken Accutane within the previous six months. Candidates for skin peels must also avoid the use of Retina-A, Renova, prescription skin care drugs, any products containing ascorbic (or any other variety of) acid and bleaching/skin-lightening agents in the 48 hours prior to chemical peel treatment.
