Breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure that uses implants to enlarge and improve the shape of your breasts.
The female breast has become a symbol of nurturing, femininity and sexuality. However, some women feel dissatisfied because their breasts never developed to a size that meets their expectations. Others want to restore their natural breast volume which may have decreased after pregnancy / breast feeding, weight loss, or aging.
Improving the size or shape of one’s breasts often leads to improved self-image and confidence, looking better in clothing, and better body proportions. You may want to consider undergoing a breast augmentation if you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts and want to achieve a more proportional body contour. Financing for breast augmentation is available.
What types of breast implants are there? While all implants are constructed with a solid silicone shell, you have the choice of selecting the filling, which is made from either silicone cohesive gel or liquid saline. Silicone cohesive gel implants are filled with a thick type of silicone that resembles gummy-bear or firm jello. When you cut into a cohesive gel implant, nothing oozes out. Saline is salt water, a natural body fluid also used for intravenous solutions and is harmless to the body. You’ll talk about saline versus silicone implants during your consultation and find out more implant info. What type of anesthesia is used during the breast augmentation in Canada operation?Dr. Edelstein discusses anesthesia
This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, with an anesthetist always present for the duration of your procedure and your recovery immediately after. If you have any particular problems with anesthesia, please let us know prior to surgery.
How long is the breast enhancement surgery procedure? The length of the breast enhancement surger procedure varies depending on each patient, and depends on such factors as your body and surgical technique. However, it is usually about 1.5 hours. Our Plastic Surgeons are conscientious who takes their time to make sure your procedure is performed precisely.
Our surgeons take a little longer to perform your surgery because they perform a technique known as Bloodless Breast Augmentation. This involves creating a precise and meticulous incision rather than blunt dissection. Blunt dissection is essentially putting a finger in the breast and sweeping it around to open up a pocket for the implant, which may be faster but can be quite traumatic to the patient. We want to minimize trauma to the patient so this is not done.
After creating a pocket with careful incisions, your surgeon then carefully cauterizes all of the blood vessels found in the area of implant insertion. By doing this, trauma is decreased and the potential for blood loss (and post-operative fluid build-up) is eliminated. Bloodless breast augmentation also leads to faster recovery times.
Our surgeons have reduced the rate of common implant-related complications like capsular contracture to only 1%. Health Canada studies and various medical journals have found that the rate of capsular contracture development from other breast augmentation providers can range from 10-25%. By drastically minimizing capsular contracture risk, our patients rarely require post-operative massages.Where are the incisions made? The incision for your breast augmentation can be made in one of three places. The first of the types of breast augmentation incisions is placed at or slightly above the crease under the breast. Known as the infra-mammary incision, this is one of the most common types because it allows for accurate placement of the implant. The second type of incision is placed along the lower border of the pigmented skin around the nipple. The peri-areolar incision usually heals quite well with a barely detectable scar, but this approach is not suitable for women with very small nipples. The third incision during this breast operation is placed high in the armpit and is known as the trans-axillary incision. This incision eliminates scars on the breast, but keep in mind that you will have a scar well hidden in your armpit instead. What else is done during the procedure?A pocket is made for the implant. You will choose the type of breast implants before the surgery. There are two locations where the pocket can be made: sub-mammary, which is under the breast itself, or sub-pectoral, which is under the chest muscle. For women who have some breast tissue and may also experience some ptosis (drooping), sub-mammary placement is often used because it helps lift the breasts to a certain extent. Sub-pectoral positioning is usually suitable for women with little or no breast tissue because the implant is less “feel-able” and visible, achieving a better result.
If your breasts sag or droop a lot, you may need to undergo mastopexy at the same time as your breast augmentation surgery. Mastopexy is also known as a breast lift, and it is designed to make the breasts perkier in appearance. How long will I stay at the surgical facility?Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, which means that you can go home the very same day once you have recovered from the anaesthesia. That will most likely be a few hours. When are the stitches removed? You won’t have to worry about the removal of stitches because dissolving ones are used. They don’t have to be removed. What happens after the surgery? Most patients feel tenderness and bruised post op while recovering from breast augmentation, but are not in a great deal of pain. Medication to ease discomfort will make you feel better. Right after surgery, you will have a bandage and a bra on. A compression garment should be worn all day and night for the first two months following your surgery.
You should plan to be off work for five to seven days. You can start performing mild exercises after two to three weeks, but wait to start strenuous exercise (for example, upper body weight training) after about six weeks.
Sometimes if the implant is inserted through the armpit, drains are placed to remove excess fluid. These will be removed within two or three days. You can start showering on the second day after surgery. You’ll most likely notice that your scars will initially be red and a little raised, but over three to six months they usually get lighter in colour and flatten out during your recovery after breast augmentation. With proper care during your recovery time after breast augmentation, they’ll become a very faint silvery line that is barely noticeable. What are the results? The results of breast augmentation is an enlargement of your breasts with an improvement in their shape as well. The scars are usually well hidden. Most patients at Edelstein Cosmetic are very happy with their results and are highly pleased with their new body. During your consultation before the surgery, you’re welcome to see breast augmentation before and after pics so you can get a better idea of how your results may be.Some additional points:Make sure you let your surgeon know about your complete medical history as well as any medications, drugs, vitamins, or natural herbs you are taking before your surgery, during the consultative process. This is for your safety. For example, diabetes is known to affect wound healing.
Smoking also affects your ability to heal, and we recommend that you stop smoking at least two weeks before your surgery to adequately prepare your body. Aspirin, anti-inflammatory pills (like anaprox or motrin), and vitamin E should also be stopped two weeks before surgery because they can cause extra bleeding, increasing the risk of breast augmentation complications.
