How a Chin Implant Balances Facial Features

In both the United States and Canada, chin implants are becoming the most popular plastic surgery trend. Between 2010 and 2011, the spike in popularity of the procedure was 71%. The meteoric rise of chin implants may have to do with social media and video technology. Since video chatting has become normal, more and more people are becoming more aware of their chin and jawline.

Correcting a Receding Chin

The chin is an important part of a person’s profile, and both women and men can be self-conscious of their receding chins. When people look in the mirror, they tend to notice their nose, wrinkles or jowls. People with a weak, or receding, chin will notice these features more because their nose may look proportionately larger, and their neck and jawlines less defined, saggier or fatter. The more a person’s chin recedes, the more their nose dominates their face. People with weak chins will find that it makes sagging neck skin appear worse than it actually is.

Many surgeons combine chin implants or sliding genioplasties with other cosmetic procedures, like a rhinoplasty, or nose job. This improves an overall balance of facial features and proportions. Chin implants  or sliding genioplasties can also be combined with liposuction of the neck, a necklift or facelift.

Chin Implant Surgery

Chin implant surgery takes about an hour. A sliding genioplasty, in which your own bone is reshaped or resized, takes only a little longer. You will be given local or general anesthesia. The surgeon will then make an incision inside your mouth between the gums and inside of your lip. Once the tissue is stretched, space is created for the implant.Your surgeon will then place the implant right on the bone that supports your chin and secure it into place with tiny screws so that it does not move,  The chin implant is made from a synthetic material that will feel like natural tissue. The implant that the surgeon will choose will be a shape and size that is planned for in advance using special x-rays to determine the best size that matches the patient’s face. The surgeon will then close the incision with fine dissolving sutures. The scar is inside the mouth and therefore not visible.

In a sliding genioplasty, a qualified plastic surgeon will precisely cut the chin bone and slide it forward, up or down, to reach its ideal proportion and position. The bone is then also secured with tiny screws which allow it to fuse back to the rest of the bone in its new position making it permanent.

Chin implants are a safe and effective way to define the jawline while improving the proportion of the facial features. For patients that are older, it can give their face a more youthful appearance.

The Recovery Process

Patients can manage the post-surgery pain using over-the-counter medication. However, the pain that most patients experience is mild to moderate. For the first few days after surgery, there will be sensitivity in the jaw area, and chewing will be limited and therefore The surgeon will put the patient on a liquid and soft food diet for the first two or three weeks following the procedure.

Most of the patient’s swelling will go down within two to three weeks. Once the swelling goes down, the patient will be able to see the final results. While the patients will be able to see results within a couple of weeks, the entire healing process won’t be complete for months.
