Rhinoplasty Recovery Tips

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that improves the look or shape of your nose. Some people have the surgery performed for cosmetic reasons and others for health related reasons, such as improve breathing. Once the surgery is completed though, you will need to go through a cautious recovery period and if you are not prepared for it, you may not know what to expect.

Below, we will go over some recovery tips to help you throughout your recovery period, and, always remember that if you experience severe pain or symptoms you do not believe should be occurring, get in touch with your surgeon right away.

Be prepared for tenderness

You just had surgery on your nose! Of course it is going to be tender. Do not touch or maneuver your nose. The pain is easily relieved with the medication you’ve been prescribed after which time your nose will feel numb.It takes about six weeks for your nose to begin to feel normal again.

Avoid swimming or intense exercising

As your nose heals, you really need to relax and not hop right into your favorite activities. Since your nose is still recovering from the procedure, you want to avoid swimming or jumping into water as it may put pressure on your nose and change the shape and disrypt the work that was done.

In addition, you should avoid any heavy duty exercising for six weeks for the same reason. Once you do start to get back into exercising, avoid activities where something may hit your nose until it is completely healed.

Avoid placing anything on your nose

If you wear glasses, avoid placing them on your nose. It may be a hard habit to break, but it is important that you minimize the amount of weight on your nose as too much weight can alter the look of your completed procedure. Your surgeon should give you tips on how you can use your glasses without disrupting the shape or position of your healing nose.

Stop smoking and avoid drinking alcohol

Did you know that smoking and excessive drinking can lead to slower recovery times? As if six weeks wasn’t long enough! If you are a smoker or drinker, stop the habit before surgery and throughout the recovery time. You will thank yourself in the end as you will heal much quicker with less risk of complications

Avoid direct sunlight exposure

You want to avoid placing your new nose  and face out in the sun for an extended period of time and when you do need to go out into the sun, make sure you use sunscreen or protect your nose for up to 6 months following your surgery. The reason behind this is that the sun can cause the skin on your nose to discolor after the procedure has been performed.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, it is important to know what to watch for throughout recovery. Severe swelling, bleeding, or intense pain is not common and you should speak with your surgeon right away if you experience any of these symptoms.
