Belkyra- Is It Right For You?

There is an amazing new solution for stubborn, “double chin” fat. Not only is it non-surgical and safe but it provides dramatic results with just a few in-office treatments.

Belkyra (deoxycholic acid) is also known as Kybella in the United States. Kybella is the trade name for ATX-101, a patented synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring bile salt which is found naturally in the body and helps to emulsify fats among other functions. Used for injectable cosmetic treatment, Belkyra destroys fat cells where it is injected. Belkyra has been approved for the treatment of moderate to severe submental or, “double chin” fat in Canada and the US.

If stubborn fat below the chin is an issue for you, Belkyra treatment may be the less-invasive fat reduction solution you are seeking. In the past, liposuction was the only effective way to permanently reduce fat in this area. It still is a good option for many people but those who want to avoid surgery and treat this area with quick injections will find this to be an appealing option.

  • *Do you have an allergy to deoxycholic acid?
  • *Do you have trouble swallowing
  • *Do you have a thyroid disorder
  • * Do you have swollen lymph glands in your neck
  • * Do you have a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder such ashemophilia.
  • * Are you pregnant or breastfeeding?
  • * Are you under 18?

Answering yes to any of the questions above would likely mean that you should wait to be treated with Belkyra. Talk to your injector about any of the above situations.

If you are a good candidate for Belkyra treatment, your injector will carefully map out the treatment area under your chin and as many as 50 injections in this space can be given per treatment. Up to 6 Belkyra treatments may be required but many patients note significant improvement after only 2 or 3 treatments. The customization of your personal treatment is based on your anatomy and your needs. Your doctor will determine the number of Belkyra treatments for you to have. Each appointment for Belkyra treatment should be spaced a month or more apart.

Immediately post treatment, swelling will appear under the chin and last a few days to a week. This is a normal effect of Belkyra and actually demonstrates that it is working. Minor redness and pain resolve within a few days. Some patients report feeling hardness under the chin.

Belkyra may not be a suitable treatment for under chin fat if accompanied by excess, loose skin. If platysmal bands, loose and hanging skin under the chin is a concern for you, treatment with Belkyra will not address it, unfortunately. This treatment removes excess fat only and will not tighten or remove excess skin. If your physician feels that Belkyra treatment will leave you with more extensive skin laxity under the chin, they may recommend that you consider a surgical procedure to remove it and tighten this area, along with fat removal.

The best way to find out if Belkyra in Toronto is right for you is to book a consultation and discuss your goals with an experienced injector.
