Types of Rhinoplasty

Edelstein Cosmetic offers our Toronto patients a variety of advanced surgical techniques depending on their individual aesthetic and functional needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your goals to determine the best approach to improving your nasal appearance.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

A cosmetic rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose for purely aesthetic reasons. This facial cosmetic surgery is one of the most popular choices among both men and women seeking to refine their facial harmony and achieve a more balanced, proportionate look. Whether addressing concerns such as a crooked nose, a bump on the bridge, a wide or asymmetrical nostril, or a drooping tip, cosmetic nose surgery can significantly improve an individual’s facial profile.

The surgery is highly customizable, allowing patients to achieve results that complement their unique features and help them feel more confident in their appearance. As one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries, rhinoplasty can offer physical and psychological benefits by boosting self-esteem and satisfaction with facial aesthetics.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure aimed at correcting structural issues within the nasal cavity that impair normal breathing. The primary goal of this surgery is to improve airflow and restore proper nasal function, addressing conditions such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or chronic nasal obstruction, which can lead to difficulty breathing, frequent sinus infections, or sleep disturbances like snoring and sleep apnea. One of the most common reasons for functional rhinoplasty is the correction of a deviated septum—a condition where the nasal septum, the cartilage, and bone that divide the nostrils are off-center, causing restricted airflow and turbulence in the nasal passages.

Functional rhinoplasty is often performed in conjunction with cosmetic rhinoplasty when patients not only wish to address functional issues but also improve the appearance of their noses. This dual approach allows for the correction of structural problems while simultaneously enhancing the aesthetics of the nose, providing a holistic solution that improves both function and form. Combining functional and cosmetic objectives allows patients to experience better breathing, reduced discomfort, and a more balanced, pleasing facial appearance. This procedure can significantly impact the quality of life, helping individuals breathe more easily and comfortably while also boosting self-confidence.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized corrective surgery performed to correct or improve the results of a previous rhinoplasty that did not meet the patient’s expectations or led to complications. Whether due to aesthetic dissatisfaction, functional issues, or unexpected outcomes such as breathing difficulties or nasal deformities, revision rhinoplasty seeks to refine or restore the appearance and functionality of the nose. This procedure is often more complex and challenging than primary rhinoplasty because the nasal structures may have been altered, weakened, or scarred from the initial surgery. As a result, the surgeon must work carefully with compromised tissue and may need to employ advanced techniques to rebuild and reshape the nose.

Common reasons for revision rhinoplasty include asymmetry, irregularities in the nasal tip, over- or under-correction of the nasal bridge, or breathing difficulties caused by issues like scar tissue or an improperly healed septum. Sometimes, the original surgery may have unintentionally caused nasal collapse or distortion, leading to functional and aesthetic concerns.

Revision rhinoplasty requires a highly skilled surgeon with experience in handling the complexities of post-surgical nasal anatomy. The process often involves meticulous planning and a deeper understanding of how to address the delicate balance between restoring nasal function and achieving a natural, harmonious appearance. Due to the intricacies involved, revision rhinoplasty may involve additional recovery time and a longer healing period than the initial surgery, as the nasal tissues must recover from both the prior procedure and the new corrections.

Overall, while revision rhinoplasty can be a more delicate and time-consuming procedure, it offers patients the opportunity to resolve issues from prior surgery, improving both their breathing and facial aesthetics for long-term satisfaction.

Alarplasty

Alarplasty is a cosmetic procedure that refines the shape and size of the nostrils to enhance facial harmony. This minimally invasive surgery involves making small incisions at the base of the nostrils to remove excess skin and cartilage, resulting in a more sculpted and balanced appearance.

The procedure can be tailored to each individual’s facial features, allowing for a personalized outcome that complements one’s overall look. Whether performed alone or combined with rhinoplasty, it can significantly boost confidence and facial aesthetics.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to target specific ethnic nasal features and alter them to an aesthetic that honors the patient’s heritage, not hide it. The most common ethnic rhinoplasties are with Asian and Black patients, as their unique nasal characteristics require a tailored approach.

This procedure focuses on enhancing features such as bridge height, tip shape, and nostril width while maintaining the individual’s cultural identity. Skilled surgeons understand the nuances of each ethnic background, ensuring that results appear natural and balanced with the overall facial structure. Ethnic rhinoplasty aims to improve both appearance and functionality, enhancing confidence while respecting the beauty of diversity.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, or liquid rhinoplasty, alters the nose’s shape and size using injectable fillers. This is actually risky. Unlike other areas that are treated with injectable fillers, nasal injections carry a particularly high risk due to the blood vessels nearby that feed into your eyes. Injection into one of these vessels can lead to blindness. Since this is the only anatomical location that carries such a high risk, this is the one type of injection we do not perform. Edelstein Cosmetic is focused on your safety above all else. We won’t risk your health or your pocketbook if there is a better and safer alternative to giving you the look you want.

Let’s get started

What’s the first step?

The first step towards getting a rhinoplasty in Toronto, ON, is to schedule a consultation with one of our Board-certified plastic surgeons. During this appointment, Dr. Fialkov or Dr. Hong will ask about your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations. They will examine your nasal elements and go over the various techniques, including whether you need an open or closed rhinoplasty, advising which he thinks is most suitable for your case.

Once you both have finalized the treatment plan, our patient coordinator will discuss any pricing options and pre-operative instructions you need to follow for optimum surgery success and recovery. They can also help schedule your surgery if you desire.

How Do I Prepare for My Rhinoplasty?

Preparing properly for your rhinoplasty surgery is essential to ensure a smooth procedure and optimal recovery. Here are the key steps to take before your surgery:

  • Schedule a Consultation: Meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals, medical history, and expectations, ask any questions about the procedure, recovery, and potential risks, and follow your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions closely.
  • Stop Smoking & Avoid Alcohol: To promote proper healing, quit smoking and use nicotine products at least two weeks before and after surgery, and avoid alcohol consumption one week before to reduce the risk of swelling and bleeding.
  • Adjust Medications & Supplements: Inform your surgeon of all your medications and supplements. To reduce bleeding risks, avoid blood thinners, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and herbal supplements, like vitamin E and ginseng, for at least two weeks before surgery. Also, take only approved medications as directed by your doctor.
  • Prepare Your Recovery Space: Prepare a comfortable recovery area with pillows to keep your head elevated, stock up on soft foods, ice packs, gauze, and prescribed medications, and have entertainment like books, movies, or podcasts ready for your downtime.
  • Arrange Transportation & Support: Since you’ll be under anesthesia, arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. You should also consider having a friend or family member stay with you for the first 24 hours.
  • Plan for Time Off Work & Activities: Most patients need at least one to two weeks off work for initial recovery and should avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting for four to six weeks after surgery.
  • Follow Pre-Surgery Guidelines: If you are undergoing general anesthesia, do not eat or drink after midnight before surgery. Shower and wash your face with a gentle cleanser the night before. Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or skincare products on the day of surgery. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, preferably with a front zipper or buttons.

Following these steps will prepare you for your rhinoplasty procedure, ensuring a smoother surgery and recovery process. Always follow your surgeon’s specific instructions for the best results.

What to Expect On the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

On the day of your Rhinoplasty procedure,  your surgeon and his staff will welcome you. Your treatment plan will be presented to you again for any last-minute questions and/or concerns. Our anesthetist will then administer anesthesia to ensure you are pain-free during the procedure.

The rhinoplasty procedure will then be performed. Depending on what has been discussed, it may be an open procedure, in which he makes incisions on the columella (the little skin bridge that separates your nostrils) and inside the nostrils, or a closed procedure, in which the incisions are hidden inside your nose. A splint may be used to support and maintain your nose’s new shape.

The surgery can take anywhere between one and three hours, depending on how complex it is.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

After the surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery room by our postoperative team until your sedation wears off. Once discharged, you will need to have a family member or friend available to drive you home and potentially stay with you that night for assistance as you recover.

You can expect to have minor bruising, swelling, and pain, along with temporary blocked nasal passages. This will all subside over the next two weeks, and you can return to normal activities by week three. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity for four to six weeks after surgery. After eight weeks, the nasal bones and cartilage will have knitted together, and you can finally return to unrestricted activities.

It takes about a year for your nose to settle into its final contour as minor residual swelling resolves and the skin envelope continues to contract.

Tips for Recovery

Recovering from rhinoplasty requires patience and proper care to ensure the best results. Follow these tips to promote healing and minimize discomfort:

  • Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions: Follow your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines carefully and attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.
  • Keep Your Head Elevated: Sleep with your head elevated using extra pillows or a wedge pillow. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach to prevent pressure on your nose.
  • Apply Cold Compresses: For the first 48 hours, apply a cold compress around your eyes and cheeks (not directly on your nose) to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Avoid Touching or Blowing Your Nose: To prevent complications, refrain from blowing your nose for at least two weeks. If you need to sneeze, open your mouth to reduce nasal pressure.
  • Manage Swelling and Bruising: Swelling will gradually subside over several weeks, with residual swelling lasting up to a year. Reduce salt intake to minimize swelling, and be patient, as final results take time to develop.
  • Stay Hydrated and Eat Nutritious Foods: Drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, protein, and antioxidants to promote healing, and avoid spicy foods that may irritate your nose.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activities:  For at least four to six weeks, avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, and activities that raise your blood pressure. Also, refrain from bending over or making sudden movements that may increase swelling.
  • Protect Your Nose from Trauma: Be cautious in crowded places, avoid contact sports for several months, and wear glasses carefully. If needed, use special tape or forehead support to prevent pressure on the bridge of your nose.
  • Limit Sun Exposure: Wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your nose from direct sunlight outdoors. This will prevent discoloration and prolonged swelling.

Be Patient with Your Healing Process: Initial swelling will subside within a few weeks, but full results may take up to a year, so consult your surgeon with any concerns instead of making assumptions.
