Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove additional stubborn fat from your body. Typically, people choose to have the procedure performed on their chest, thighs, buttocks, back, tummy tuck, and arms. It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss remedy and most people who have it performed are already at their ideal weight or within a close range. In fact, liposuction is generally used to remove fat that does not respond to exercising and diet alone.
The process is performed by using a tube called a cannula. This tube is inserted under the skin and facilitates the removal of fatty cells through a high-powered vacuum attached to the cannula itself.
Liposuction has both benefits and risks that go along with it and it is important that you understand all of them to prevent any undesired results or side effects.
Risks of Liposuction
Many of the risks that occur with liposuction are minimal such as mild swelling and bruising, but there are some major side effects and risks that you should know and understand. If you are ever concerned about one of the risks, speak with your surgeon as he or she can help you better understand what to expect.
Some of the risks associated with the procedure include:
- More severe swelling or bruising
- Irregularities in your shape
- Pulmonary embolism or blood clots
- Allergic reactions
- Reactions to anesthesia
- Organ punctures
- Burns on the skin
- Infection
- Slow or poor healing
- Loose skin
- Change in the way the skin feels
It is important to note that not all of these risks will occur, but it is wise to take precautionary measures. Risks such as skin burns, organ punctures, and blood clots are less common, but there is a extremely small chance it can happen. The good news is that so far, “knock on wood”, none of these more serious complications have occurred at Edelstein Cosmetic.
To avoid any of the above risks, it is important that you follow your surgeon’s instructions on how to take care of your incision site and body after the procedure.
Benefits of Liposuction
While there are some risks associated with the procedure, there are also benefits that go along with it. It is up to you to weigh the benefits and risks against each other to see if the procedure is right for you.
Some of the benefits associated with the procedure include:
- Better body image
- Confidence
- Look and feel better
- Fat reduction
- Prevent health complications
Many people choose to have liposuction done because they want to have a better image of themselves and they are unhappy with the way they look. Liposuction can remove additional fat and give you the contoured body you desire. In addition to personal reasons, some people need to have liposuction performed for medical reasons.
