Facelift Introduction

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, can make you look about 11 years younger, as the study Outcome Analysis in 93 facial rejuvenation patients treated with a deep-plane facelift led by Dr. Eric Swanson suggests. In the same study, 93.5% of patients reported that they would recommend a facelift to someone else.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Fialkov and Dr. Christopher Hong of Edelstein Cosmetic in Toronto each possess the experience, expertise, and surgical skills in facial plastic surgery, making them popular Plastic Surgeons in Canada. They will tailor your facelift to achieve your goals, creating a result that enhances your natural features.

What is a Facelift?

A rhytidectomy is a procedure designed to reverse the signs of aging. Common areas targeted for rejuvenation include the cheeks, nasolabial folds (the folds that run from the nose to either side of the mouth), jowls, jawline, and neck.

Facelifts are often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a brow lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (nose job), or skin rejuvenation. Personalized to meet each client’s aesthetic goals, your provider will target each section of the face individually to create a beautiful and refreshed overall look.

Types of Facelifts

Various types of facelifts depend on the patient’s needs and medical history. At Edelstein Cosmetic, your provider will help you find the best match.

Mini-Facelift

A mini facelift is a refined, less invasive version of the traditional facelift, designed to address the early signs of aging with a quicker recovery time. This procedure involves smaller, strategically placed incisions, typically hidden along the hairline, ensuring discreet results. By lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues, a mini facelift targets key areas such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and jawline. The outcome is a smoother, more youthful contour, reducing sagging and restoring a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance—without the extended downtime or additional incisions often associated with a full facelift.

At Edelstein Cosmetic in Toronto, our skilled team takes a personalized approach to ensure the mini facelift achieves natural, harmonious results that complement each patient’s unique features. With years of expertise and a focus on precision, the team delivers a rejuvenated look that enhances your beauty while preserving your individuality. Whether you’re seeking to refine early signs of aging or simply lift and refresh your lower face, Edelstein Cosmetic’s mini facelift offers a minimally invasive solution that provides lasting, confident results with minimal disruption to your daily life.

Full Facelift / Deep Plane Facelift / Vertical Restore Facelift

Our full facelift, known as the deep plane facelift, goes beyond just lifting the skin—it involves repositioning both the skin and the deeper layers of tissue for a more comprehensive, lasting transformation. Deep plane facelifts require advanced surgical skills as they incorporate deeper layers of muscle and tissue beneath the SMAS layer (a layer of fascia that overlies the muscles), achieving a more effective lifting and tightening of the face compared to traditional facelifts. The key advantage of this technique is the ability to reposition the deeper tissues vertically, allowing for a more natural and smooth lift. This approach lets the skin be redraped gently in a separate direction, avoiding the tight, pulled appearance often associated with traditional facelifts. By focusing on both the superficial and deeper layers, the deep plane facelift ensures a balanced, harmonious result that looks rejuvenated, not “stretched.”

The deep plane facelift creates a more natural and refreshed appearance and delivers longer-lasting results. By addressing the underlying tissues, the lift is more sustainable and resists the natural effects of aging over time. This technique enhances facial contours and restores volume and definition to key areas like the cheeks, jawline, and neck. The overall effect is a dramatic yet refined improvement that looks refreshingly youthful without the overly tight or artificial appearance that can sometimes occur with more conventional facelift methods.

Non-Surgical Facelift

As the name suggests, a non-surgical facelift offers a temporary yet impactful rejuvenation of the face using a carefully curated blend of non-invasive treatments. This approach combines dermal fillers, neuromodulators, and advanced topical applications to restore volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance facial contours without the need for surgery. The result is a refreshed, youthful appearance that revitalizes your features. All while maintaining natural expression and avoiding the downtime associated with more invasive procedures, a non-surgical facelift offers a temporary yet impactful rejuvenation of the face.

Whether lifting sagging skin, softening deep lines, or adding volume where it’s needed most, a non-surgical facelift provides a customized solution that allows you to look your best with minimal commitment.

A new you awaits

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting a facelift at Edelstein Cosmetic is to schedule a consultation at our practice. On the day of your appointment, your surgeon will evaluate your needs and cosmetic goals and physically examine your unique facial features, including skin quality, skin laxity, soft tissue, sagging jowls, and neck muscles. Based on your medical history, he will recommend a surgical or non-surgical facelift for you. For instance, poorly controlled hypertensive patients are better served with non-invasive procedures.

If you are deemed a good candidate for a surgical facelift, he will discuss the procedure with you, including where the various incisions will be placed and what you can expect.

Once you and your provider have agreed on your custom procedure plan, our Patient Coordinator will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for it.

These tips may include stopping certain medications and supplements in the days before the procedure and avoiding sun exposure. We may also recommend a skincare routine.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift surgery at Edelstein Cosmetic, your surgeon and their staff will meet you, make you comfortable, and review your treatment plan again. When you are comfortable and ready to go, an anesthetist will administer general anesthesia to make your experience pain-free.

Once you are sedated, depending on the choice of facelift, your provider will start the incisions and the facial manipulation for the final aesthetic result. He will take your gender, ethnicity, and physical anatomy into consideration as he treats your face. Once the excess skin and fat are extracted and deeper tissues repositioned, he will close the incisions with a focus on minimizing scarring. You might have a surgical drain placed to remove any excess fluid buildup. After your surgery, a compression dressing will be gently applied to protect the incisions and prevent any collections of fluid.

The process can take four to six hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the number of additional procedures.

Facelift Recovery

The recovery period for a facelift can vary depending on the extent and depth of the procedure. Immediately after your procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery room until sedation wears off. We recommend a family member or friend drive you home.

You will be sent home with two drains placed. Drains are necessary for the facelift procedure to minimize swelling and bruising. They typically come out within 1-2 days.

You can expect swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort during facelift recovery in the first few days after the procedure. Your provider will give you pain medication and detailed care instructions, including head elevation, gentle walks, and compression.

We recommend taking a week off from work, avoiding strenuous activity, and avoid exercising for up to four weeks.

Risks and Complications of Facelift Surgery

While facelift surgery is generally considered safe, it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks and complications. Understanding these can help you make an informed decision and prepare for any eventualities. Here are some of the risks associated with facelift surgery:

  • Bleeding or Hematoma: Excessive bleeding during or after the surgical procedure can lead to a hematoma, a collection of blood outside of blood vessels. Correcting this may require additional surgery.
  • Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection. While this can typically be treated with antibiotics, severe cases might necessitate further surgical intervention.
  • Scarring: Although facelift incisions are usually made in discreet locations, there is still a risk of visible scarring. Most scars will fade over time and become less noticeable.
  • Nerve Damage: There is a risk of nerve damage during facelift surgery, which can result in numbness, tingling, or facial weakness. This is usually temporary, but in rare cases, it can be permanent.
  • Asymmetry: Post-surgery, facial features may be asymmetric or uneven. This can often be corrected with additional surgery.
  • Skin Necrosis: A rare complication where the skin dies due to a lack of blood supply. This condition may require further surgery and can result in scarring.

It’s essential to discuss these risks and complications with your surgeon before undergoing facelift surgery to ensure you are fully informed and prepared.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery Options

Facial cosmetic surgery offers a variety of options to address different aesthetic concerns and enhance your natural beauty. Here are some of the most popular procedures:

  • Facelift Surgery: This surgical procedure lifts and firms the lower face, cheeks, jowls, and neck, providing a more youthful appearance by removing excess skin and tightening underlying tissues.
  • Neck Lift Surgery: Targeting the neck area, this procedure removes excess skin and fat while tightening the underlying muscles to create a smoother, more defined neck contour.
  • Eyelid Surgery: Also known as blepharoplasty, this procedure addresses the upper and / or lower eyelids by removing excess skin and fat, resulting in a more alert and youthful look.
  • Brow Lift Surgery lifts and firms the eyebrows, reducing the appearance of forehead lines and wrinkles and creating a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
  • Facial Implants: Surgical procedures that use implants to enhance the shape and contours of the face, such as cheek or chin implants, provide better facial balance and definition.
  • Fat Grafting: This technique transfers fat from one area of the body to another, often used to restore volume to the face, enhancing facial contours and providing a more youthful appearance.

Each procedure can be customized to meet your specific aesthetic goals, ensuring a natural and harmonious result.
