Facelift Introduction

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, can make you look about 11 years younger, as the study Outcome Analysis in 93 facial rejuvenation patients treated with a deep-plane facelift led by Dr. Eric Swanson suggests. In the same study, 93.5% of patients reported that they would recommend a facelift to someone else.

What is a Facelift?

A rhytidectomy is a procedure designed to reverse the signs of aging. Common areas targeted for rejuvenation include the cheeks, nasolabial folds (the folds that run from the nose to either side of the mouth), jowls, jawline, and neck.

Facelifts are often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a brow lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (nose job), or skin resurfacing. Personalized to meet each client’s aesthetic goals, your provider will target each section of the face individually to create a beautiful and refreshed overall look.

Types of Facelifts

Various types of facelifts depend on the patient’s needs and medical history. At Edelstein Cosmetic, your provider will help you arrive at the best match for you.

Mini-Facelift

A mini facelift is a smaller surgery than a traditional facelift. With shorter incisions around your hairline, your provider will lift the lower half of your face, targeting the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and jawline.

Full Facelift / Deep Plane Facelift / Vertical Restore Facelift

Our full facelift called a deep plane facelift, involves repositioning the skin and deeper tissues. The advantage is that the deeper tissues can be repositioned vertically, allowing the skin to be redraped gently in a separate direction, avoiding the typical tight look. Treating the deeper tissues also leads to much longer-lasting results. The overall result is a more natural yet dramatic improvement that doesn’t look stretchy like a traditional facelift.

Non-Surgical Facelift

As the name suggests, a non-surgical facelift temporarily rejuvenates the face using a combination of non-invasive dermal fillers, neuromodulators, and topical applications.

Please visit its dedicated page HERE for more information on a non-surgical facelift.

A new you awaits

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting a facelift at Edelstein Cosmetic is to schedule a consultation at our practice. On the day of your appointment, your surgeon will evaluate your needs and cosmetic goals and physically examine your unique facial features, including skin quality, skin laxity, soft tissue, sagging jowls, and neck muscles. Based on your medical history, he will recommend a surgical or non-surgical facelift for you. For instance, poorly controlled hypertensive patients are better served with non-invasive procedures.

If you are deemed a good candidate for a surgical facelift, he will discuss the procedure, including where the various incisions will be placed and what you can expect.

Once you and your provider arrive at your custom procedure plan, our Patient Coordinator can help you schedule your surgical date and provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for it.

These tips may include stopping certain medications and supplements in the days before the procedure and avoiding sun exposure. We may also recommend a skincare routine.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift surgery at Edelstein Cosmetic, your surgeon and their staff will meet you, make you comfortable, and review your treatment plan again. When you are comfortable and ready to go, an anesthetist will administer general anesthesia to make your experience pain-free.

Once you are sedated, depending on the choice of facelift, your provider will start the incisions and the facial manipulation for the final aesthetic result. He will take your gender, ethnicity, and physical anatomy into consideration as he treats your face. Once the excess skin and fat are extracted and deeper tissues repositioned, he will close the incisions with a focus on minimizing scarring. You might have a surgical drain placed to remove any excess fluid buildup. After your surgery, a compression dressing will be gently applied to protect the incisions and prevent any collections of fluid.

The process can take four to six hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the number of additional procedures.

Facelift Recovery

The recovery period for a facelift can vary depending on the extent and depth of the procedure. Immediately after your procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery room until sedation wears off. We recommend a family member or friend drive you home.

You will be sent home with two drains placed. Drains are necessary for the facelift procedure to minimize swelling and bruising. They typically come out within 1-2 days.

You can expect swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort during facelift recovery in the first few days after the procedure. Your provider will give you pain medication and detailed care instructions, including head elevation, gentle walks, and compression.

We recommend taking a week off from work, avoiding strenuous activity, and exercising for up to four weeks.
