Any cosmetic surgical procedure requires your plastic surgeon to close any incisions made. Two methods of incision closure in cosmetic surgery are with thread sutures (stitches) or staples.
SUTURESSutures are essentially a type of thread that is absorbable or non-absorbable. Absorbable sutures are made from bio-compatible materials that gradually break down and disappear, normally after the affected tissue of the incision heals closed. Non-absorbable sutures do not break down and need to be removed.
STAPLESStaples used in cosmetic surgery are typically made from some type of metal, often stainless steel.
Dr. Edelstein talks about sutures applied during tummy tuck surgery.SUTURES VS STAPLES FOR […]
Stretch marks are a common problem that many think are impossible to resolve. Many patients ask us how to remove stretch marks that negatively affect their body. Fortunately, tummy tucks can drastically reduce the appearance of some stretch marks.CAN A TUMMY TUCK TREAT MY STRETCH MARKS? IS IT AN EFFECTIVE TREATMENT TO REMOVE STRETCH MARKS?
Location For Effective Stretch Mark Removal Toronto
The location of the stretch marks (also known as striae) and the patient’s individual circumstance dictate whether or not a tummy tuck is an appropriate procedure for their treatment. If the stretch marks are localized in the area of the […]
The shape and size of our chins has a greater impact on our overall appearance than most of us would think. A chin that doesn’t project far enough will make our faces appear disproportionate and disharmonious as will an overly short or long chin.
Fortunately, these issues can be addressed through chin reshaping (genioplasty). A skilled craniofacial surgeon can use one of two techniques — sliding genioplasty or chin implant placement — to significantly improve their patients’ appearance.
ACHIEVING GREAT RESULTS
Chin augmentation works by correcting disproportionate facial features. Patients who suffer from an unusually small chin (micogenia), excess chin height, a disproportionate […]
Structural (or incisional) rhinoplasty refers to the modification of the nose by changing the shape and position of the nasal tip cartilage. This process leaves the skeletal framework of the nose strong and relatively intact, helping to make treatment safer, predictable, and more accurate. If any tissue is removed, particularly when fixing an oversized nasal bridge, hump or bulbous tip, it can also be referred to as excisional rhinoplasty. The excisional technique involves the removal (or excision) of some of the cartilage and other tissue found in the nostril and/or tip of the nose during the reshaping process. By removing […]
For the majority of women, there is a natural space between the right and left breast. This space creates a separation between the two breasts, so that they may both be defined as separate mounds. More importantly, it also defines the cleavage. Regardless of the size of your breast implants, it is important that this space remains for a more natural appearance.
However, if you notice that the space between your breasts has disappeared following your breast augmentation or the skin in the area is raised to a certain extent, then you have developed symmastia (a condition that can also exist […]
When planning your breast enhancement it’s easy to become confused as to what the difference is between the various implant shapes available. Fortunately, Dr. Edelstein can help you make the right choice by assessing your body, discussing your goals, and recommending the right type of implant to use in achieving your dream results.ROUND IMPLANTS VERSUS ANATOMICAL IMPLANTS (AKA TEARDROP IMPLANTS)The two styles of devices commonly used in modern breast augmentation procedures are round and anatomical (or “teardrop”) shaped silicone cohesive gel implants. As their descriptive names suggest, round implants have a more circular shape than the teardrop profile of the […]
One of the most notable risks of breast implants is rupture/deflation.What is a Rupture?A breast implant rupture refers to a process where the outer shell of the implant is broken, creating a hole or tear that allows the substance inside the implant (either saline or silicone gel) to release. After a rupture, different types of breast implants react differently. A saline-filled implant will deflate and the solution will either partially remain in the shell or move into the scar tissue that surrounds the implant. The filling of silicone implants, on the other hand, typically stays within the shell and are […]
Saline implants are made of a solid silicone shell filled with saline liquid. Saline is salt water, a natural body fluid also used for intravenous solutions. It is harmless to the body. Are Saline Implants Safe?Saline filled implants have been used successfully in thousands of women for over 30 years, and are considered very safe. They are the most common type of implant used in North America, although in recent times cohesive gel silicone implants have been gaining popularity. By finding out more information about both breast implant types, you’ll be able to decide if you want saline or silicone implants.A […]
If you are considering enhancing the size of your breasts and addressing sagging as well, the procedures you should consider are breast augmentation (implants) and mastopexy (breast lift). Approximately 50% of our patients who seek augmentation mastopexy have the procedures performed at separate times. Known as “staged” augmentation mastopexy, this approach has a longer safety record than when both procedures are performed at the same time, in a single surgery (known as single-stage, of which the other 50% of patients have performed).
During staged augmentation mastopexy, the mastopexy is usually performed first. This allows the breast to be lifted and shaped […]
Most of us know that smoking isn’t good for us, but not all of us are aware that the habit is particularly dangerous when associated with plastic surgeries. Smoking puts unnecessary stress on the heart while also complicating wound healing and breathing, marking the habit as a significant risk factor that should be avoided by all plastic surgery patients. SMOKING RELATED COMPLICATIONS FROM PLASTIC SURGERY
Your Breathing
Smokers are more likely to experience breathing problems following surgery than non-smokers (40% compared to 11%) because tobacco smoke damages the lining of the lungs. When the lungs are compromised, they are less efficient in […]
